There was a type of yellow chicken curry, somespicy beef, spingrolls, fresh vegetables and a giant vat ofsticky rice. Within seconds of loading up our plates thetwo drunkest 20-year olds at the party pulled up four chairsfor us. One for our plates and the other for our asses.Before even taking my first bit I had a 1/3 glass full ofBeerLao between my eyes.This is where the story takes a dramatic twist. It is notbecause I started drinking. Thats a little later. Thetwist is because this story is being composed for BreakMagazine and they dont allow any references to drugs oralcohol. Therefore I have written two versions. The onewhere I drink myself to a point where I believe I canunderstand the Lao language is the version you are reading.Although we were given utensils I chose to forego thewesternization of the land and eat using the dippingtechnique utilized by most people. Another "kop chi li li", a swig fromhis glass and we were friends. I pulled up another chairfor the special guest and we began to speak. Theconversation took a slow start. Not because of tuxedo man,but rather because I had been so used to talking to peoplewho spoke absolutely no English, that I was conversing likea trained monkey. Shortly into the conversation I learned Pond was indeed thehonored guest at what I learned was his wedding. Thehandsome 24-year old had just been hitched and he oozedelation. As I scarified down my food I learned he works forthe Lao government as an AIDS educator. He also told usabout a cousin of his who lives in NYC and his desire to mytown. My door will always be open. Laotian men usually marry in there twenties. The bride isusually younger. She will most likely be from the samevillage and will probably be related in some degree becausemost villages are small. Couples choose each other, but theheads of both families decide when the couple will marry,where they will live, and what bride price must be paid tothe girls father. This is usually in currency, although inolden times it was in livestock or grain. The grooms family delivers the bride price to the bridesfather on the day before the wedding. The groomsrelatives parade to the brides house with gifts of food,tobacco, betel and so on. The groom makes his formalrequest for the bride. Her family, after a long-winded,purely ceremonial show of reluctance finally agrees. In thepresence of a bonze or village elder, the couple isofficially betrothed. The next day, the groom and hisrelatives again proceed to the brides house, where theymake a great show of fighting and bribe their way into theyard. The groom must persuade the brides sister to washhis feet before he can ascend the steps to the house andclaim his bride.Divorce is rare in Laos, partly because each marriageconcerns everyone in two large, extended families. Couples choose each other, but theheads of both families decide when the couple will marry,where they will live, and what bride price must be paid tothe girls father. This is usually in currency, although inolden times it was in livestock or grain. The grooms family delivers the bride price to the bridesfather on the day before the wedding. The groomsrelatives parade to the brides house with gifts of food,tobacco, betel and so on. The groom makes his formalrequest for the bride. Her family, after a long-winded,purely ceremonial show of reluctance finally agrees. In thepresence of a bonze or village elder, the couple isofficially betrothed. The next day, the groom and hisrelatives again proceed to the brides house, where theymake a great show of fighting and bribe their way into theyard. The groom must persuade the brides sister to washhis feet before he can ascend the steps to the house andclaim his bride.Divorce is rare in Laos, partly because each marriageconcerns everyone in two large, extended families. If amarriage is dissolved, the bride price has to be returned,and there are endless complications concerning inheritanceand land use. The first place I found that I liked and stayed at was the Mintzicuri Hotel at Vasco de Quiroga No. 227. The rooms were very clean and comfortable at a rate of about $8 a night. Within a week of arriving in Morelia my schools housing director, Charly (a dear, sweet lady), took me to look at local apartments. I found one at the Posada de Villa located at Padre Lloreda No. 176 for about $150 a month. Then, after a few weeks I decided to see what was available in the local paper. I found a rooming house that offered a room for about $50 a month at Vincente Santa Maria No. 1925. When I went to check it out, I found a large, comfortable room with a bath shared by 3 other roomers. We also had access to cooking facilities as well as a mini refrigerator in each room. Day-to-day life in MoreliaI lived a basic, simple life. I would stop at a local bakery and buy rolls, bolillos (small loaves of bread), and/or galletas (large cookies) for breakfast on my way to school. El Centro (downtown) was generally always crowded and busy. Many of the side streets off of Avenida Francisco Madero (Morelias main downtown street) had shopping bazaars and mercados with every imaginable item from food to clothes to leather goods to electronic items and much more. The one area I did not care much for was right around the bus depot (long distance buses). There are x-rated theatres and other nefarious activities close to that location. One thing I came to really appreciate in a hurry, was that I did not have to wash my own clothes. There are no self-service laundries that I am aware of in Morelia. I usually took my clothes to the laundry service in the block just down the street from my room. Two of my friends at a local Internet cyber café were especially helpful to me. When I first went to Morelia, my spoken Spanish consisted of only being able to speak in the present tense. I had never really learned how to properly conjugate verbs. Even though I could read and understand Spanish very well, I was very limited in my ability to converse. At first, I carried 2 very helpful books Practical Conjugation of Verbs and a Spanish dictionary, both published by Larousse. For 2 months I carried these books everywhere I went and referred to them almost constantly. One day, my friends Genaro and Marcos took me aside and told me to put the books away, try to think and talk as best I could in Spanish and let them help me to correct errors in my grammar. I noticed there werent any people doing the drunken"hook-up" stager that are so prevalent at weddings in thestates. The vibe was comfortable, respectful and fullydevoid of my wedding experiences. I made a b-line for the 15-foot buffet table. It wasdefinitely the path of least resistance. It was obviousthat everyone had finished eating at least 2 hours prior andthe table was in the process of being taken down. Seemedfairly logical that I grab a spring roll and dowse it insome spicy papaya sauce before it becomes a leftover.Before I could even put the first bite in my mouth a pair ofwomen rounded the table and handed us all the utensils weneeded. "Kop Chi Li Li" or thank you spewed from mouthabout 100 times in the next 3 minutes. They either likedthe way I pronounced the phrase or had giant hearts becausetheir smiles stretched from ear to ear.The buffet had what appeared to most of the staples of theLaos diet. There was a type of yellow chicken curry, somespicy beef, spingrolls, fresh vegetables and a giant vat ofsticky rice. Within seconds of loading up our plates thetwo drunkest 20-year olds at the party pulled up four chairsfor us. One for our plates and the other for our asses.Before even taking my first bit I had a 1/3 glass full ofBeerLao between my eyes.This is where the story takes a dramatic twist. It is notbecause I started drinking. Thats a little later. Thetwist is because this story is being composed for BreakMagazine and they dont allow any references to drugs oralcohol. Therefore I have written two versions. The onewhere I drink myself to a point where I believe I canunderstand the Lao language is the version you are reading.Although we were given utensils I chose to forego thewesternization of the land and eat using the dippingtechnique utilized by most people. Three bites in and onceagain a 1/3 full glass of BeerLao is between my eyes. Theyoung man offering the glass was pimped out in a blacktuxedo and appeared to be the kind of guy whom you shouldaccept a drink from. Another "kop chi li li", a swig fromhis glass and we were friends. I pulled up another chairfor the special guest and we began to speak. Theconversation took a slow start. Not because of tuxedo man,but rather because I had been so used to talking to peoplewho spoke absolutely no English, that I was conversing likea trained monkey. Shortly into the conversation I learned Pond was indeed thehonored guest at what I learned was his wedding. Thehandsome 24-year old had just been hitched and he oozedelation. As I scarified down my food I learned he works forthe Lao government as an AIDS educator. He also told usabout a cousin of his who lives in NYC and his desire to mytown. My door will always be open. Laotian men usually marry in there twenties. The bride isusually younger. She will most likely be from the samevillage and will probably be related in some degree becausemost villages are small. Couples choose each other, but theheads of both families decide when the couple will marry,where they will live, and what bride price must be paid tothe girls father. This is usually in currency, although inolden times it was in livestock or grain. The grooms family delivers the bride price to the bridesfather on the day before the wedding. The groomsrelatives parade to the brides house with gifts of food,tobacco, betel and so on. The groom makes his formalrequest for the bride. Her family, after a long-winded,purely ceremonial show of reluctance finally agrees. In thepresence of a bonze or village elder, the couple isofficially betrothed. The next day, the groom and hisrelatives again proceed to the brides house, where theymake a great show of fighting and bribe their way into theyard. The groom must persuade the brides sister to washhis feet before he can ascend the steps to the house andclaim his bride.Divorce is rare in Laos, partly because each marriageconcerns everyone in two large, extended families. I stopped getting beat up, the fitting just hung in the slipstream by my canopy bow, at 230 knots. So there I was...Eight thousand feet above Afghanistan at 230 knots. "You know, If a guy really wanted to get shot by a MANPAD he'd fly a profile alot like what I'm doing right now." Oh well. It's at times like this when you just make a decision and go with it. Before I could even put the first bite in my mouth a pair ofwomen rounded the table and handed us all the utensils weneeded.� "Kop Chi Li Li" or thank you spewed from mouthabout 100 times in the next 3 minutes.� They either likedthe way I pronounced the phrase or had giant hearts becausetheir smiles stretched from ear to ear.The buffet had what appeared to most of the staples of theLaos diet.� There was a type of yellow chicken curry, somespicy beef, spingrolls, fresh vegetables and a giant vat ofsticky rice.� Within seconds of loading up our plates thetwo drunkest 20-year olds at the party pulled up four chairsfor us.� One for our plates and the other for our asses.Before even taking my first bit I had a 1/3 glass full ofBeerLao between my eyes.This is where the story takes a dramatic twist.� It is notbecause I started drinking.� That�s a little later.� Thetwist is because this story is being composed for BreakMagazine and they don�t allow any references to drugs oralcohol.� Therefore I have written two versions.� The onewhere I drink myself to a point where I believe I canunderstand the Lao language is the version you are reading.Although we were given utensils I chose to forego thewesternization of the land and eat using the dippingtechnique utilized by most people.� Three bites in and onceagain a 1/3 full glass of BeerLao is between my eyes.� Theyoung man offering the glass was pimped out in a blacktuxedo and appeared to be the kind of guy whom you shouldaccept a drink from.� Another "kop chi li li", a swig fromhis glass and we were friends.� I pulled up another chairfor the special guest and we began to speak.� Theconversation took a slow start.� Not because of tuxedo man,but rather because I had been so used to talking to peoplewho spoke absolutely no English, that I was conversing likea trained monkey.� Shortly into the conversation I learned Pond was indeed thehonored guest at what I learned was his wedding.� Thehandsome 24-year old had just been hitched and he oozedelation.� As I scarified down my food I learned he works forthe Lao government as an AIDS educator.� He also told usabout a cousin of his who lives in NYC and his desire to mytown.� My door will always be open.� Laotian men usually marry in there twenties.� The bride isusually younger.� She will most likely be from the samevillage and will probably be related in some degree becausemost villages are small.� Couples choose each other, but theheads of both families decide when the couple will marry,where they will live, and what bride price must be paid tothe girl�s father.� This is usually in currency, although inolden times it was in livestock or grain. The groom�s family delivers the bride price to the bride�sfather on the day before the wedding.� The groom�srelative�s parade to the bride�s house with gifts of food,tobacco, betel and so on.� The groom makes his formalrequest for the bride. Her family, after a long-winded,purely ceremonial show of reluctance finally agrees.� In thepresence of a bonze or village elder, the couple isofficially betrothed.� The next day, the groom and hisrelatives again proceed to the bride�s house, where theymake a great show of fighting and bribe their way into theyard.� The groom must persuade the bride�s sister to washhis feet before he can ascend the steps to the house andclaim his bride.Divorce is rare in Laos, partly because each marriageconcerns everyone in two large, extended families.� If amarriage is dissolved, the bride price has to be returned,and there are endless complications concerning inheritanceand land use.� It is much more sensible to compromise.Working things out, in general, is the Laotian response toalmost every conflict.� Isn�t that a novel idea?In the background we watched the nucleus of the party dance.Thankfully there are no traditions of the Marquerena orchicken dance in Laos.� This is one of the things I�mhappiest about.� Tonight they danced the Lamvong.� It�s acombination folk dance and courting ritual.� Girls dance inplace with short, rhythmic steps, while boys weave circlesaround them; no one touches.� The faces of the dancers arecompletely expressionless, but their arms and hands wave incomplicated patterns expressive of love and devotion.Frankly, unless you are Laotian, you will end up lookinglike a queen doing this jig.The groom apologized to us that the party we crashed wasalmost over.� He insisted we accompany him to the parents ofhis wife�s house for an after party.� The two guys sittingnext to us indicated that they would escort us to the party.Pond cordially dismissed himself and affirmed ourattendance.As soon as the 48-ounce bottle of BeerLao was cashed wewould head out.� As the pace and the amount of the beer inthe glass increased I decided to engage the transportationquestion.� I was pretty su

The ceremony of the passing of the rings was undertaken with the assistance of the son of Sabine and Benji.He carried the rings up to the alter of the church in a small, padded heart shaped bag and passed them to the priest.The couple spoke a few words and placed the rings on each other�s fingers as the cameras again flashed a whirred.Everyone then began to make their way out of the church waiting for the bride and groom to stand outside the church for some more photographs.But the players of St Cernin had one more trick up their shirts as we donned our kit and picked up a football each.We made a guard of honour outside the church and held a ball high over the guests as they made their way out into the village square.But it was Benji and Sabine who everyone was waiting for.People passed around rice and confetti waiting for them to leave the church and run under the footballs, as they did the place exploded.The church bell tolled and rice cascaded down on our heads covering the players and the newly married couple from head to toe.Then it was time for more photographs, car horns sounding and the children throwing rice and confetti at each other.As the day drifted into late afternoon it was time for a small aperitif and a few nibbles in the grounds of the Mairie.Watching the sun slowly slide behind the church tower as the celebrations moved on into the night. Before even taking my first bit I had a 1/3 glass full ofBeerLao between my eyes.This is where the story takes a dramatic twist. It is notbecause I started drinking. Thats a little later. Thetwist is because this story is being composed for BreakMagazine and they dont allow any references to drugs oralcohol. Therefore I have written two versions. The onewhere I drink myself to a point where I believe I canunderstand the Lao language is the version you are reading.Although we were given utensils I chose to forego thewesternization of the land and eat using the dippingtechnique utilized by most people. Three bites in and onceagain a 1/3 full glass of BeerLao is between my eyes. Theyoung man offering the glass was pimped out in a blacktuxedo and appeared to be the kind of guy whom you shouldaccept a drink from. Another "kop chi li li", a swig fromhis glass and we were friends. I pulled up another chairfor the special guest and we began to speak. Theconversation took a slow start. Not because of tuxedo man,but rather because I had been so used to talking to peoplewho spoke absolutely no English, that I was conversing likea trained monkey. Shortly into the conversation I learned Pond was indeed thehonored guest at what I learned was his wedding. Thehandsome 24-year old had just been hitched and he oozedelation. As I scarified down my food I learned he works forthe Lao government as an AIDS educator. He also told usabout a cousin of his who lives in NYC and his desire to mytown. My door will always be open. Laotian men usually marry in there twenties. The bride isusually younger. She will most likely be from the samevillage and will probably be related in some degree becausemost villages are small. Couples choose each other, but theheads of both families decide when the couple will marry,where they will live, and what bride price must be paid tothe girls father. This is usually in currency, although inolden times it was in livestock or grain. The grooms family delivers the bride price to the bridesfather on the day before the wedding. The groomsrelatives parade to the brides house with gifts of food,tobacco, betel and so on. The groom makes his formalrequest for the bride. Her family, after a long-winded,purely ceremonial show of reluctance finally agrees. In thepresence of a bonze or village elder, the couple isofficially betrothed. The next day, the groom and hisrelatives again proceed to the brides house, where theymake a great show of fighting and bribe their way into theyard. The groom must persuade the brides sister to washhis feet before he can ascend the steps to the house andclaim his bride.Divorce is rare in Laos, partly because each marriageconcerns everyone in two large, extended families. If amarriage is dissolved, the bride price has to be returned,and there are endless complications concerning inheritanceand land use. It is much more sensible to compromise.Working things out, in general, is the Laotian response toalmost every conflict. Isnt that a novel idea?In the background we watched the nucleus of the party dance.Thankfully there are no traditions of the Marquerena orchicken dance in Laos. This is one of the things Imhappiest about. Tonight they danced the Lamvong. Its acombination folk dance and courting ritual. Girls dance inplace with short, rhythmic steps, while boys weave circlesaround them; no one touches. The faces of the dancers arecompletely expressionless, but their arms and hands wave incomplicated patterns expressive of love and devotion.Frankly, unless you are Laotian, you will end up lookinglike a queen doing this jig.The groom apologized to us that the party we crashed wasalmost over. He insisted we accompany him to the parents ofhis wifes house for an after party. The two guys sittingnext to us indicated that they would escort us to the party.Pond cordially dismissed himself and affirmed ourattendance.As soon as the 48-ounce bottle of BeerLao was cashed wewould head out. As the pace and the amount of the beer inthe glass increased I decided to engage the transportationquestion. I was pretty sure these guys had scooters.Frankly Im not a big fan of riding on the back of thosethings in any situation. In addition, I was positive boththese guys were half in the bag. After a satisfying meal and great service our only compliant being they had no outdoor full service deck, we headed over to the corner store to pick up some reasonably priced refreshments. Having fully stocked the expedition, we took the shuttle back to our starting point in Landa park. This time we all took the refreshing plunge into the cool waters of the Comal quickly and rafted up for the descent down the tube chute.
Our final trip through the tube chute stared the same as the last, but my ten year-old daughter who was tied off with her grandmother broke away and got caught up in the whirlpool action just behind the dam. She couldn't get back across the main outflow of the spillway, and couldn't grab the high bank wall to get back to the steps just behind the dam. She made several attempts just below the park rangers un-watchful eyes before I yelled and motioned to her to stay put in her tube. I waded back upstream on the opposite bank and dove into the main current of the tube chute which sent me rocketing across the river to the opposing shore. As I neared the high concrete embankment, I jumped and grabbed hold of the wall only to be swiftly washed off by an influx tubers and the surge of water preceding them. Trying to keep my head above water I got a very nice shin rash from the sharp concrete wall foundations as I grabbed for the stair rails and my second attempt to get out of the swift currents. Finally with a new found respect for the tame waters of the Comal I headed up stream on the opposite bank to assist my daughter. Having heeded my advise she was resting near the wall in a clam area where the top of the wall was just out of her reach. Laying down she handed me her tube and I pulled her out of the water for the brief trip on the walkway back downstream. As I ambled, fairly exhausted, past the park rangers I gave them the quizzical eye as if to say, where the hell where you.
The remainder of the float downstream I was amazed at the stupidly of jumping into the gushing confluence of the dam's spillway as I consumed a refreshing Mexican import. Kids being kids, my son and I tried our hand at standing on our tubes in the calmer and deeper sections of the Comal as our thoughts turned toward our next adventure at the Texas Ski Ranch.
What to Expect:
When you go to tube chute, on the Comal expect the ride to be swift, you should wear water shoes or rafting sandals to protect your feet from the concrete and uneven river bottom - the rocks and steps are covered in algae and are slippery. You can go through the tube chute as many times as you want and with a tube outfitter shuttle float the Comal several times in a day. The tube chute is not recommended for weak swimmers or children under 6. The remainder of the 2.5 mile river is pure family enjoyment. The crowd can be load and rowdy at times including some beer bong drinking college students in the shallows on long the way. So be sure to avert the eyes if some beer drinking young lady should flash the cheering crowds. You will be floating through the lush backyards and urban parks in the town of New Braunfels, so if you need to exit the river for any reason make sure you are not trespassing as the landowners are not tolerant due the the aforementioned beer drinking crowds. The Trip is a definite must do if in central Texas in August. On the up side, this is not the Schlitterbahn, this is what inspired the Schlitterbahn. My 14 year old son after a day at America's favorite water park (we got waited in line for the MasterBlaster for 1:43 minutes starting at 10:26 am and we were off the ride at 12:11) and a day on the Guadalupe pronounced the Comal his favorite.

This is usually in currency, although inolden times it was in livestock or grain. The grooms family delivers the bride price to the bridesfather on the day before the wedding. The groomsrelatives parade to the brides house with gifts of food,tobacco, betel and so on. The groom makes his formalrequest for the bride. Her family, after a long-winded,purely ceremonial show of reluctance finally agrees. In thepresence of a bonze or village elder, the couple isofficially betrothed. The next day, the groom and hisrelatives again proceed to the brides house, where theymake a great show of fighting and bribe their way into theyard. The groom must persuade the brides sister to washhis feet before he can ascend the steps to the house andclaim his bride.Divorce is rare in Laos, partly because each marriageconcerns everyone in two large, extended families. If amarriage is dissolved, the bride price has to be returned,and there are endless complications concerning inheritanceand land use. It is much more sensible to compromise.Working things out, in general, is the Laotian response toalmost every conflict. Opening doors and drawers, scoping out the floors and ceilings, everywhere I turned I found more and more refurbishments. Beautiful stone tiled replace the linoleum on the floor. Shiny, new appliances, granite countertops, and imported furniture adds charm.The major renovation is a chain of events that keeps going until the very last step the addition of slate to the stairs. This was going on during my stay and I visited with the construction workers who took great pride in their work. They stopped what they were doing each time we came by and even took the time to secretly spray off our surfboards and wetsuits, never telling us until the day of our departure. Was it the California sunshine that makes people so happy and helpful? Maybe it's because life on the U.S. mainland's paradise is so carefree. I don't know but it's a rare find, not just the hotel with its history, character, and renovations, but discovering people who secretly did things just "because". Had I fallen into an episode of the Twilight Zone?The palette of colors chosen for the suites is straight from the beach itself. Nature is the director of this play of hues: tans, browns, whites, and gold, mimicking the sandy shore lying a few steps outside the door. Granite counters and tabletops and reed and bamboo accents on the furniture continue to invite the great outdoors inside. Heavy stone lamps and framed seashell artwork continue the living space to the coastal environment. Some suites boast balconies overlooking the deep powder blue Pacific Ocean. All is balanced with just a hint of contemporary elegance, providing a carefree beach feel without sacrificing luxury. It is more mature and sophisticated, yet comfortable and easy. The perfect balance.Now how can you top all of this off? With the dreamiest bed imaginable!, a bed repeating the natural theme and the bedding! Oh the bedding could have been a magazine feature in itself! Soft, plump pillows, and a generous comforter that is beyond words cradled me like a white cumulus cloud on a perfect San Diego day. (Wait, I've never seen a day in San Diego that isn't perfect!)Diamond Head Inn's location can only be described as P-E-R-F-E-C-T!One hundred feet outside your door is the beach, meaning an emphasis on the smell of the ocean, yet not so close that you can hear the crowd.Everything is accessible without renting a car or taxi. My daughter and I join the famous 2-½ mile Boardwalk action, using every form of transportation other than motor vehicles: we hike, bike, skate, jog, and walk to the nearby shops, restaurants, and Belmont Park, where the rollercoaster and other rides thrill vacationers. We even bike to Mission Bay from the hotel. The end of the Boardwalk rewards us with one of the most incredible views: bright flowers framing the ocean blue.The Boardwalk sandwiches between the Pacific Ocean's crashing waves for the more adventurous types and glistening Mission Bay for those dreaming their day away on a sailboat. A jetty connects the two bodies of water and is breathtaking as the white canvas of sails contrast against an I-can't-even-begin-to-describe-blue sky.Just a short walk from Diamond Head is Crystal Pier, the scene for fishing or watching surfers below.
